OFWW Newsletter              October 2024

Message from the President

The Bash is Back!   After a challenging year of weather-related delays and cancellations, less than ideal course conditions, and permanent loss of the Marsh course, the OFWW will return to tournament action on October 8th.  We’ll celebrate with Burgers and Brews afterwards so I hope you will all join the fun!

I appreciate everyone’s patience the past few months as the BOD has worked with club management to resume league play.  Brent Johnston in particular put a lot of effort into working tee schedules that would retain play day openings for the OFWW while allowing room for the ladies nine and eighteen hole leagues to resume play as well.  Unfortunately, Bash’s had to be canceled until all course repairs were complete and the club was comfortable resuming shotgun start events.  While some process tweaking continues, OFWW activities should be back to normal soon.

Marsh Holes 1, 9, 10, and 18 are now open for “practice”.  You do not need to reserve a time or check in, just go out and work on your game!  The club is planning additional improvements to these holes and the Marsh Chipping Practice Area in the future to further the utility and enjoyment of these facilities.  Watch for additional club communications related to these changes.

Course conditions are generally very good, however there are some areas still damaged from tree removal after Hurricane Beryl.  Any areas of the course where damage remains should be considered Ground Under Repair and relief taken in accordance with USGA Rule 16.  This includes areas where the removal equipment rutted the ground, or piles of wood chips remain after stump grinding.

The rough on all three courses has been particularly challenging since league play resumed in August (it has been an issue at away Interclub matches as well).  I’m told by club maintenance staff that conditions should improve in the Fall.  In the meantime, it’s a good idea to be sure every shot has an extra spotter to help reduce search time (maintain pace of play) and avoid lost balls.

Finally, we’ll be voting to fill several Board of Director positions at our November Annual meeting.  A list of the open positions and overview of the nomination process was distributed to members Thursday, September 19th.  I encourage you to consider getting involved in the BOD if you haven’t already - it’s a great way to learn more about the organization, meet and get to know members, and interact with Clubs of Kingwood representatives.

Looking forward to a great turnout on October 8th!

See ya there!

David

2024 Preliminary Bash Schedule

The monthly bashes are a team event and a great way to meet new people and compete for slightly higher cash prizes.

The bashes are generally held the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 9am except for January (3rd Tuesday) and December (1st Tuesday).

October 8 - Forest

November 12 - Island (Breakfast, Meeting & Draft Before)

December 3 - Lake (1st Tuesday and Social After)

A social with beer and soft drinks is usually planned after the bash in the scoring area for all bashes except for November and December.

Please remember that this is a preliminary schedule and subject to change.

2024 Bash Results

The July, August and September Bash’s were cancelled because of the continuing course repair activities and limited tee times.

Play Days

The play days are a great way to have a tournament type competition and win some money.   Stroke play in flighted fields for a very small entry fee.    You sign up for any available tee time and you can meet other golfers by signing up to play with different golfers each time.

You can find the results for each playday under the results tab on the OFWW website.

We play lift clean and place for all rounds between November 1 and March 31 and we play the tree root rule all year long.

The OFWW policy allows any member to play the forward tees on the Island course without any restrictions.   OFWW members can also elect to play the Combo Tees with no restrictions.  Please make sure you indicate that on the tee sheet when you sign up.

Golf Genius OFWW Member Portal

OFWW Interclub

The Kingwood OFWW has two teams that participate in the "North Houston Retired Senior Men's Golf Association".  Each team plays home and away matches at other participating clubs, usually on Thursdays.  It is a great way to meet people, participate in exciting competitions and play different clubs for just a cart fee.   You do not have to play every week.

To join a team contact:

Joe Blankenship - Captain Marsh Team  (joeblankenship54@gmail.com)

or

Or reply to OFWWkingwood2022@Gmail.com and one of the captains will contact you.

OFWW Member Hole-In-One

To join or resign from the Hole in One club please go to Golf Genius using this link Join HIO Pot  https://www.golfgenius.com/pages/8279458090852566906

If you get a hole in one during a playday or Bash to please notify Christopher.reiner@invitedclubs.com and Jack Alexander at Jalexand76@Aol.com about that. The Golf Genius system doesn’t necessarily flag your hole in one, for example if your score on that hole is tied with somebody else. Please tell them the hole and course, witnesses, club used, enclose a picture if you took one etc..  If you are in the hole in one pot Chris can get the payout process started.

Please do participate in the HIO pot and win some money to buy your playing partners drinks.

Members Giving Back to the Community

Rick Miles has been a long-time member of the OFWW and an active member on the Marsh Interclub Team.

This will be my 5th year riding in a Great Cycle Challenge!  I love riding to help the children!  Each year I have ridden more miles than the previous year and have raised more money each year!  I will try my best to do the same this year!  The children and I appreciate your support for such a great cause!

This September, I am riding 200 miles in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

And my challenge starts this week.

Right now, cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in the United States - 38 children die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

Please support my 200-mile challenge by donating through my fundraising page:

https://greatcyclechallenge.com/Riders/RickMiles/m

Your donation will support the Children’s Cancer Research Fund to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Thank you.
