44th  Illinois State Junior Girls’ Championship – Day 1

 

8:00 am. on August 1st saw the first round of the 44th Illinois State Junior Girls’ Championship commence at Aldeen GC in Rockford Illinois.  A field of 43 had warm and sunny--perfect weather conditions for the competition.  Scores proved the competition to be very close.  There were 3 players that tied for medalist at 73 —  Nicole Johnson from Edwardsville, Kathie Magner from Winnetka,  (a first time competitor with the IWGA), and Laura Hu from Northbrook! 

 

One stroke behind shooting 74 is Martha Kuwahara, Northbrook. Martha recently won here age group at the Masters, Drive, Chip and Putt contest.

 

Flight One had scores of 79 or better.  Rockford sisters Ella and Eva Greenberg, and Kayla Sayyalinh anchored the Rockford competitors.

 

The IWGA presented Nicole Johnson with the Julia Dodds award, a $2000 scholarship presented annually to a

deserving applicant.  Nicole will attend Middle Tennessee University. The Helen Spencer Award, a $2000 scholarship for each winner, was presented to Emma Tjaden from Staunton and Madelyn Young from Mount Carmel.  Emma will attend Southern Illinois University and Madelyn will attend Ball State University. 

 

Wednesday, August 2nd is the second and final round.  The overall winner can come from any flight and often has,

so the door is wide open for many players.   

 

Spectators, relatives, and the media are all encouraged to come out and watch these aspiring young lady golfers!!
