OFWW Newsletter      September 2023

Message from the President

This time I want to start off with giving Kudo’s to Stan and Tim for organizing the Bash this last month in such a way that the vast majority of the field (84 participants) finished in under 4 hours and the spread between 1st and last place was only 8 strokes. 6 Teams tied for 1st place, 3 teams tied for 2nd place and then 3rd place to 27th place was filled with ties in each position. I can’t remember when we had a field that was so close, competitive, and flowed so well. Obviously, the ABC format helped a lot, but it was hot and team handicaps were well balanced overall.

While it might seem a bit early with the heat of summer refusing to move on, we are beginning to plan for the Annual OFWW Meeting in November.  One of the key agenda items will be to elect new Board members to fill terms that will be expiring at the end of the year.

As you may remember, last year we voted to stagger the election of officers over a two-year period utilizing one-year and two-year terms so that certain key positions (Group A and Group B) do not turnover in the same year. The Nominating Committee is responsible for identifying a slate of officers to fill positions that complete their terms each year and avoid paired replacements in Group A and Group B in the same year. See Article 3 Section 4 of the By Laws.

Furthermore, the Nominating Committee is responsible for finding and nominating an overall slate of candidates that are aligned with the organization’s mission and objectives and well suited to fill the open positions. The officer positions that are up for election for 2024/2025 are:

  • President
  • Vice-President (unexpired Term)
  • Treasurer
  • Membership & Communications
  • Lake Team Captain
  • Tournament Chair

Please note that filling the President and Vice President position this year is a bit unusual as traditionally the sitting Vice President has succeeded the President and been elected for a 2-year term and then the VP Position would be up for election. As you are aware, the current unexpired VP position was filled by appointment of the Board to fill an unexpected vacancy. So, this is obviously a challenge for the Nominating Committee to address and propose a solution acceptable to the membership based on who agrees to be considered during the nomination process.

Having laid out the above picture, during September the Nominating Committee will send out a separate communication laying out the Nominating process and solicitating interest from members to be considered for 2024 Officer nominations including contact details and response deadline. If you are interested be sure to register your interest timely.

OFWW 2023 Annual Meeting and Election of Officers

The 2023 annual meeting and election of officers will be held before the November Bash.   Breakfast will be provided.

2024 Membership Dues

OFWW member dues are $30 a year.   Your dues are used for beer and soda after the Bashes, one or two lunches a year after the Bashes including our annual holiday lunch in December, breakfast before our annual meeting in November, interclub expenses, donations to junior golf and some other administrative type expenses.

Dues will be billed to your KCC club account and included with your November bill.   If you wish to resign your membership in the OFWW and not be billed dues for 2024 please reply to Jack by September 30th.

Use Your Pro Shop Credit by 12/31/2023

Remember all pro shop credit must be used by December 31, 2023, or it will be forfeited per Invited Club rules.  Year-end carryover balances complicate Invited Clubs accounting and tax records which is why they want our members to use all their pro shop credit by year end.  KCC members get a 20% discount off the ticketed price of merchandise.

You can find your balance on the Invited Club App under billings (Usage/Credit Book Available Balance) or ask the pro shop attendants to tell you your balance.

To eliminate any issues with using small amounts won in November or December the Club has agreed not to post any winnings in November or December until January of the new year.   That gives you 12 months to use those credits.

August 2023 Bash Results

The August Bash was an ABC scramble with a max out score of bogey (bogey is your friend.)

Play Days

The play days are a great way to have a tournament type competition and win some money.   Stroke play in one of 3 flighted fields for a very small entry fee.    You sign up for any available tee time and you can meet other golfers by signing up to play with different golfers each time.

You can also find the results for each play day under the results tab on the OFWW website.

Couple of things to note:

You do not need to check in at the pro shop before the play day.   The starter notes the information for billing.

You must enter your score in the Golf Genius app.   You do not need to turn in a paper scorecard.

You do not need to enter your score into the GHIN system.   The pro shop transfers it over.

Payouts for winning are now credited to your golf shop credit book account once a month.  Players should check the amounts to verify they are correct.   Questions about the amounts should go to Tim.

The play day participants are sorted into 3 nearly equal groups based on a handicap ranking for skins game and for performance payouts.

If you sign up for a play day but then find you will not be able to play, we are asking that you cancel your teem time.   No shows result in having less than a foursome, cause us balancing problems with the flights and create unequal payouts.   To help with this problem and to make things easier for you to cancel at the last minute we are implementing the following procedures:

The sign-up sheet will now stay open until 6:30 am the day of the playday.

If you can’t play, please cancel before that time.   This will also allow players to sign up until that time as well.

Flights will be balanced at that time and will not be adjusted once the round starts.

If a player is a no show, or does not finish the round, they will be charged the $3 fee.

We are hopeful these changes will help you and help the play days run smoother.

The play day schedule for September is:

Playdays will move to 7:27 start times until next June due to courses returning to that start time after Labor Day

Tuesday Sept 5 - Marsh Playday

Thursday Sept 7 - Lake Playday

Tuesday Sept 12 - Lake BASH

Thursday Sept 14 - 2x Interclub on Marsh

Tuesday Sept 19 - Lake Playday

Thursday Sept 21 - Marsh Playday

Tuesday Sept 26 - Island Playday

Thursday Sept 28 - 1x Senior Interclub on Marsh - Limited Play

We are continuing the OFWW policy of allowing any member to play the forward tees on the Island course without any restrictions.   Please make sure you indicate that on the tee sheet when you sign up.

From the end of February  to mid October, the teams play weekly matches with 11 other country clubs in the North Houston and Montgomery County area. The clubs include April Sound, Atasocicta, Bentwater, Elkins Lake, Hearthstone, Lake Windcrest, Northgate, Panorama, River Plantation, Walden Lake Conroe and Walden Lake Houston. It is a great way to play these other courses for just a cart fee.

OFWW Member News

For the last several years Rick Miles has participated in in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer and raised hundreds of dollars for that charity.  Rick will be participating in the challenge again this year and invites your support.

Hi, my name is Rick Miles, and my goal is to pedal 200 miles throughout the month of September as part of a fund raising activity.

Why am I doing this?  Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in the United States - 38 children die of cancer every week. It's awful to think so many young lives are lost to this terrible disease.

Kids should be living life, NOT fighting for it.

To show my support, I am taking on this 30-day challenge to support cancer research and give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

It will be tough, but it's nothing compared to what these brave kids face every day as they battle this disease and fight for their lives.

So today, I'm asking for your support.

Please make a donation through my fundraising page to support my challenge and join me in the fight to save little lives.

All funds raised will support Children's Cancer Research Fund to continue their work to develop innovative treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

OFWW Member Hole-In-One

To join or resign from the Hole in One club please go to Golf Genius using this link Join HIO Pot  https://www.golfgenius.com/pages/8279458090852566906

If you get a hole in one during a playday or Bash to please notify Tim Lovell at Tim.Lovell@Invitedclubs.com and Jack Alexander at Jalexand76@Aol.com about that. The Golf Genius system doesn’t necessarily flag your hole in one, for example if your score on that hole is tied with somebody else. Please tell Tim the hole and course, witnesses, club used, enclose a picture if you took one etc..  If you are in the hole in one pot Tim can get the payout process started.

Please do participate in the HIO pot and win some money to buy your playing partners drinks.
