OFWW Newsletter          July 2023

Message from the President

Wow oh wow. When I said in the May newsletter “it is starting to look like the April and May rainy season may be finally over with summer on the way”.  None of us had any idea that the weather gods had such an unwelcome surprise for us.  Definitely no rain but we went from 80 degrees to 100+ in a matter of days.  No time to gradually get used to increasing temperatures and hot, hot, hot!!

Please be very careful when playing, find shade, stay hydrated, use a fan to move air and when you start feeling just a little uncomfortable don’t hesitate to stop playing and go into the air-conditioning. It’s not worth it to continue to fight these conditions and trust me it’s a lot better to get out of the heat early than too late.

On another note, earlier this month we continued our trend of high level of participation for our Monthly Bash. 76 players this time. Next month we will have a shamble format again and I will be watching to see if this improves pace of play. Last Bash we had several groups that got 2 or 3 holes behind the group in front and the last group came in after nearly a 5-hour round. That is really too long. It’s not very much fun for the field behind to have to be waiting to play your next shot all the time.

I can’t stress enough to please make sure to play ready golf as much as possible. Finish all preparations for your next shot while you wait to play so you are ready to go when it’s your turn. Lastly don’t feel bad but just pick up if you can’t score anymore.  In this regard, I would hereby like to request that everyone on the team, especially the A player team captains during Bash tournaments, play a role with their teammates or playing partners to identify when it may be appropriate pick up and encourage each other to keep up pace of play.

Edwin Goldman.

June 2023 Bash Results

The June Bash was a Cha Cha Cha shamble.  It was very hot and play slowed down a bit but a good time was still had by all.  Let’s all try to pick up the pace a bit in the future and get out of the heat sooner.

Divot Days

None currently scheduled.

Play Days

The play days are a great way to have a tournament type competition and win some money.   Stroke play in one of 3 flighted fields for a very small entry fee.    You sign up for any available tee time and you can meet other golfers by signing up to play with different golfers each time.

You can also find the results for each play day under the results tab on the OFWW website.

Couple of things to note:

You do not need to check in at the pro shop before the play day.   The starter notes the information for billing.

You must enter your score in the Golf Genius app.   You do not need to turn in a paper scorecard.

You do not need to enter your score into the GHIN system.   The pro shop transfers it over.

Payouts for winning are now credited to your golf shop credit book account once a month.  Players should check the amounts to verify they are correct.   Questions about the amounts should go to Tim.

The play day participants are sorted into 3 nearly equal groups based on a handicap ranking for skins game and for performance payouts.

The play day schedule for July is:

Tuesday July 4 - NO PLAYDAY

Thursday July 6 - Marsh Playday

Tuesday July 11 - BASH - Forest

Thursday July 13 - Forest Playday

Tuesday July 18 - Lake Playday

Thursday July 20 - Island Playday

Tuesday July 25 - Marsh Playday

Thursday July 27 - Forest Playday

We are continuing the OFWW policy of allowing any member to play the forward tees on the Island course without any restrictions.   Please make sure you indicate that on the tee sheet when you sign up.

OFWW Interclub

The Kingwood OFWW has two teams that participate in the "North Houston Retired Senior Men's Golf Association".  Each team plays home and away matches at other participating clubs, usually on Thursdays.  It is a great way to meet people, participate in exciting competitions and play different clubs for just a cart fee.   You do not have to play every week.

From the end of February  to mid October, the teams play weekly matches with 11 other country clubs in the North Houston and Montgomery County area. The clubs include April Sound, Atasocita, Bentwater, Elkins Lake, Hearthstone, Lake Windcrest, Northgate, Panorama, River Plantation, Walden Lake Conroe and Walden Lake Houston. It is a great way to play these other courses for just a cart fee.

To join a team contact:

OFWW Member News

OFWW Member Hole-In-One

If you get a hole in one during a playday or Bash to please notify Tim Lovell at Tim.Lovell@Invitedclubs.com and Jack Alexander at Jalexand76@Aol.com about that. The Golf Genius system doesn’t necessarily flag your hole in one, for example if your score on that hole is tied with somebody else. Please tell Tim the hole and course, witnesses, club used, enclose a picture if you took one etc..  If you are in the hole in one pot Tim can get the payout process started.

Please do participate in the HIO pot and win some money to buy your playing partners drinks.
