OFWW Newsletter September 2022

Message from President

After 2 and a half solid months of summer it looks like our weather is hopefully getting out of the ‘oven at full blast’ mode. However, that may be at the cost of it becoming a bit more wet too. Oh well, less roll and sometimes more CPO but remember CPO also means Lift Clean and Place is in effect, so all in all a small price to pay.

Nevertheless, your enthusiasm to continue to play in both Bashes and Playdays remains highly impressive during these summer months. We continue to have 80+ participants in the Bashes and about 65+ participants in the Playdays.

As you may have seen in the Playday sign up notices we have made arrangements for there to be discounted beers in the Tin Cup and the Leaderboard to be displayed on the TV’s so you can follow the scores.  Several of you had expressed that the social aspect associated with our pre-Golf Genius time of manual scorekeeping, payouts, and entry fee payment by the Scorekeeper of the month in the Tin Cup was clearly missed. Hopefully we can recapture that aspect a bit and more so with the incentive KCC has provided through discounted beer prices for OFWW Playday participants!

Nobody has ever swung the club too slowly – Bobby Jones

Volunteer Opportunities and Volunteer Tournament

There are several opportunities to volunteer for things and earn enough volunteer points to play in the end of year “Volunteer Tournament.”   The most likely way for OFWW members to earn volunteer points is by participating in one of the Divot Days.   Divot Day is when we volunteer for a couple of hours in a morning to fill divots with sand on a designated course.   We had our beginning of the year Divot Days in the first quarter that was sponsored by the OFWW.   The golf pros are sponsoring another set of Divot Days as follows:

    1. Aug 31 – LAKE
    2. Sept 28 – ISLAND
    3. Oct 26 – MARSH
    4. Nov 16 – FOREST

You can sign up at the OFWW Golf Genius site or click on the link on one of the e mails you will have received from Tim.  Please speak to Tim if you have any questions or are interested in any other volunteer activities.

Play Days

The play days are a great way to have a tournament type competition and win some money.   Stroke play in one of 3 flighted fields for a very small entry fee.    You sign up for any available tee time and you can meet other golfers by signing up to play with different golfers each time.

You can also find the results for each play day under the results tab on the OFWW website.

Couple of things to note:

You do not need to check in at the pro shop before the play day.   The starter notes the information for billing.

You must enter your score in the Golf Genius app.   You do not need to turn in a paper scorecard.

You do not need to enter your score into the GHIN system.   The pro shop transfers it over.

Payouts for winning are now credited to your golf shop credit book account once a month.  Players should check the amounts to verify they are correct.   Questions about the amounts should go to Tim.

The play day schedule for September is:

Thursday September 1 – Playday Lake (7:00 start)

Tuesday September 6 – Playday Forest (7:27 start)

Thursday September 8 – Senior Interclub – Forest – NP

Tuesday September 13 – BASH on Island @ 9:00

Thursday September 15 – Senior Interclub (1x) – Lake – LP

Tuesday September 20 – Playday Lake (7:27 start)

Thursday September 22 - Senior Interclub (1x) – Marsh – LP

OFWW Interclub

The Kingwood OFWW has two teams that participate in the "North Houston Retired Senior Men's Golf Association".  Each team plays home and away matches at other participating clubs, usually on Thursdays.  It is a great way to meet people, participate in exciting competitions and play different clubs for just a cart fee.   You do not have to play every week.

From March to October, the teams play weekly matches with 11 other country clubs in the North Houston and Montgomery County area. The clubs include April Sound, Atasocicta, Bentwater, Elkins Lake, Hearthstone, Lake Windcrest, Northgate, Panorama, River Plantation, Walden Lake Conroe and Walden Lake Houston. It is a great way to play these other courses for just a cart fee.

Or reply to OFWWkingwood2022@Gmail.com and one of the captains will contact you.

The summer break has come to an end and we have started with the second half of the season.

OFWW Member Hole-In-One

If you get a hole in one during a playday or Bash to please notify Tim Lovell at Timothy.Lovell@Clubcorp.com and Jack Alexander at Jalexand76@Aol.com about that. The Golf Genius system doesn’t necessarily flag your hole in one, for example if your score on that hole is tied with somebody else. Please tell Tim the hole and course, witnesses, club used, enclose a picture if you took one etc..  If you are in the hole in one pot Tim can get the payout process started.

Please do participate in the HIO pot. Currently we have 56 participants out of over 150 active golfers in the OFWW so clearly room for more.

Member Fund Raising Activities

Do you have a fund raising activity or charity you are raising money for?   Send a note to Jalexand76@Aol.com with the information and we can post it to the next newsletter.

Rick Miles, an OFWW member, is riding his bicycle to raise money to fight children’s cancer:

Cancer is the biggest killer of kids from disease in the USA, 38 children die every week.

This month, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

I am pedaling for the entire month and my goal is to ride 200 miles.

Why am I doing this? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in the U.S. – on average, 38 children die of cancer every week!

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

It will be tough, but nothing compared to what these kids face every day of their lives as they battle this terrible disease.

And so, I am taking on a personal challenge to raise $500 to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

But to achieve my goal, I need your support.

Join me in the fight against kids' cancer! Please help me reach my goal by donating at my personal fundraising page.  All funds raised will support Children's Cancer Research Fund to continue their work in developing innovative treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Thank you for your support.

Rick

Rules Question on Balls Hit into the Woods

We have gotten some questions recently on the rules about what happens when a ball is hit into the woods and some questions about why some of the woods are marked with a red line and can play as a lateral hazard and some woods do not have any markings and should be played using the lost ball rule.

The KCC local club rule is that unless the wooded area is marked as a hazard (red line or red stakes) it is not a hazard. If the ball goes in there the usual rules apply. Ie. If the ball is lost or hit out of bounds (white line or white stakes or clearly in someone’s lawn) then the local rule is you drop it in the fairway (not rough) closest to where it went into woods for 2 stroke penalty.  If the ball is found then you have option to drop within 2 club lengths not closer to the hole for 1 stroke or go back on the line between ball and flagstick as far as needed and drop for 1 stroke or go back to tee and hit another shot for 1 stroke (stroke & distance).

Whenever in doubt after your shot play a provisional and make sure to announce it is a provisional.
