OFWW Newsletter June 2022

Message from President

In the first place let me thank all of you that have participated in the last 4 Divot Days. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, and I hope that everybody has at least picked up 3 volunteer points and can play in the annual Volunteer tournament. If you haven’t there will be some more Volunteer opportunities through the year where you could make up the deficit.

Based on all the comments received I understand that the last ‘mystery’ Bash event was not equally enjoyed by all across the board. Lots of questions about the format and misunderstanding about the pairings. We had sincerely hoped that you would enjoy something different and kudos to Stan for mixing things up like that. I do want to say please read the flyers about the bash that are issued in advance so you can familiarize yourself with that month’s format. Hopefully, we can have a few more Bashes through the year that are not just business as usual.

Now that summer seems to be upon us, I wanted to put a few reminders out about playing in the heat other than staying hydrated, utilize ways to cool off a bit along the way (like using the air-conditioned restrooms behind Claudia’s Taco shop 😊), put on sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat.

Here are a few tips:

  • Play ready golf & keep up with the group in front of you,
  • No more than 3 minutes to search for a ball
  • Whenever you are in in doubt about finding your shot play a provisional ball
  • Pick up and move to next hole when you score net double bogey (i.e., par for the hole + 2 strokes + any handicap strokes you get)
  • Strive to play your next shot in 20 secs so as you walk to your ball know the distance and decide before what club to use in other words when it’s you turn be ready to play
  • When two players are riding in a cart, drive the cart to the first ball and drop off the first player with his choice of clubs. The second player should proceed in the cart to his ball. After the first player hits his stroke, he should begin walking toward the cart as the second golfer is playing
  • Begin reading the green and lining up putts as soon as you reach the green. Don't wait until it's your turn to putt to start the process of reading the green. Do it as soon as you reach the green so that when it's your turn you can step right up and putt
  • If using a cart on a cart-path-only day, take more than one club with you when you walk from the cart to your ball. Getting to the ball only to find out you don't have the right club is a huge time waster on the golf course.

“Every day you don’t hit balls is one day longer it takes to get better”

Rules Question on Balls Hit into the Woods

We have gotten some questions recently on the rules about what happens when a ball is hit into the woods and some questions about why some of the woods are marked with a red line and can play as a lateral hazard and some woods do not have any markings and should be played using the lost ball rule.

The KCC local club rule is that unless the wooded area is marked as a hazard (red line or red stakes) it is not a hazard. If the ball goes in there the usual rules apply. Ie. If the ball is lost or hit out of bounds (white line or white stakes or clearly in someone’s lawn) then the local rule is you drop it in the fairway (not rough) closest to where it went into woods for 2 stroke penalty.  If the ball is found then you have option to drop within 2 club lengths not closer to the hole for 1 stroke or go back on the line between ball and flagstick as far as needed and drop for 1 stroke or go back to tee and hit another shot for 1 stroke (stroke & distance).

Whenever in doubt after your shot play a provisional and make sure to announce it is an provisional.

Which woods are marked as a hazard and which ones aren’t is really up to the club pros and can change at their discretion.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities to Earn Volunteer Points for Year End Volunteer Tournament

Penalty Areas   Dick Smith (Director of Golf) is working on a plan to get the courses marked more consistently but it comes down to getting the paint from the supplier and manpower right now. They had the course marked for the MGA and Ladies event last week and the goal is to have it marked for Ladies M/G next week and major events going forward until the supplies and manpower issues resolve.  Dick would like OFWW to provide about 8 – 10 volunteers to help mark the courses for each time we do a course.  Volunteer points will be earned for this activity.   Please let us know if you would be willing to volunteer for course marking activities.

Incentivizing Volunteering Participation.  Dick Smith is working on some ideas for the year-end volunteer tournament where your chances of winning prizes or higher end prizes would be enhanced by the number of volunteer points you earned during the year.   This will better reward those people who volunteer more frequently and earn more than the minimum of 3 volunteer points.   More on this will be provided as Dick decides on the plan.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities During the Year.  There will be more volunteer opportunities like future Divot Days being considered for the fall, other events for which volunteers are sought, e.g., assisting with junior tournaments and other outside tournaments like TSWGA etc. At this time there is no schedule yet, but notifications will be made closer the event for sign up.

Play Days

The play days are a great way to have a tournament type competition and win some money.   Stroke play in one of 3 flighted fields for a very small entry fee.    You sign up for any available tee time and you can meet other golfers by signing up to play with different golfers each time.

You can also find the results for each play day under the results tab on the OFWW website.

Couple of things to note:

You do not need to check in at the pro shop before the play day.   The starter notes the information for billing.

You must enter your score in the Golf Genius app.   You do not need to turn in a paper scorecard.

You do not need to enter your score into the GHIN system.   The pro shop transfers it over.

Payouts for winning are now credited to your golf shop credit book account once a month.  Players should check the amounts to verify they are correct.   Questions about the amounts should go to Tim.

The play day schedule for June is:
