Third Time is the Charm at Cherry Creek!

News Release by Christian Harrigan

Riverhead, NY (November 23, 2019): The third time proved to be the charm after mother nature prevented play on October 27th and November 16th.  Neither I nor participants were daunted and the above 40 degree temperature with bright sunshine and tame wind were welcomed by all 51 hearty golfers.   The day started with an impressive breakfast spread and concluded with a barbecue lunch. Golf via a shotgun start was sandwiched between the eating with winning scores in a range to be expected.  Here are your results from take three of the Cherry Creek Links Fall Challenge.

Championship Flight/Palmer Flight

  • Scott Kata (78) cruised to a three stroke victory to earn his third title of the young 2019-2020 season.  Scott birdied a whole on each side and recorded no score worse than a bogey all day. That is a winning formula on any course.  In addition to the Cherry Creek Fall Challenge Championship/Palmer Flight Trophy Scott was awarded a $110 Visa Gift Card.

  • Bob Lanza (81), a usual par machine, carded almost as birdies(3) as he had pars(4) en route to a solid second place finish.  For second place Bob was awarded a $50 Visa Gift Card.

Hogan Flight (8.0 – 11.9):

  • Gary Parris (79) is a man for many courses, including Cherry Creek Links which he won for the second time in the 2019 calendar year.  Gary birdied three par 4s and managed to par all four of the par 3s. In addition to the Cherry Creek Fall Challenge Hogan Flight Trophy Gary was awarded a $150 Visa Gift Card.

  • Jeff Feldman (80) has transformed from a solid Hogan player to one of the very best in the flight.  Jeff just missed out on an opportunity to go back to back after his Veteran’s Day weekend win. His round was marked by consistency, 10 pars and a birdie.  For runner-up Jef earned a $75 Visa Gift Card.

  • Ron Michne (81) earned the third place Hogan prize, a $45 Visa Gift Card.  Ron did his damage in the middle of the course with a birdies at 6 and 14 and pars on holes 8 through 13.

  • John Gandolfo (82) makes several pilgrimages each season to Long Island from New Jersey and rarely goes home empty handed.  John logged 11 pars and earned a $30 Visa Gift Card.

Sarazen Flight (12.0 – 15.9):

  • Doron Pergament (84) is also a man for many courses, including Cherry Creek which he won for the second time in the 2019 calendar year.  Doron parred half of the holes on the day to continue his reign over the Sarazen Flight. In addition to the Cherry Creek Fall Challenge Sarazen Flight Trophy Doron was awarded a $130 Visa Gift Card.

  • Michael Dwyer (86) earned second place honors in the Sarzen thanks to a hot start which included four pars in his first five holes.  For second place in the Sarazen, the 2019 NYC Marathoner earned a $70 Visa Gift Card.

  • Calvin Wilson (87) started his round with a birdie and parred three of his next four holes.  Now that’s a good start! For third place Calvin was awarded a $40 Visa Gift Card.

Jones Flight (16.0 – 19.9):

  • Glenn Mezzapesa (87) notched his third win of the 2019-2020 season and continued his dominance of the Jones flight.  Glenn parred consecutive holes from 15 through 17 and showed good mastery of the par 3’s(parred 3 of 4). In addition to the Cherry Creek Fall Challenge Jones Flight Trophy Glenn was awarded a $130 Visa Gift Card.

  • Brian Buonomo (89/46) prevailed in a match of cards to earn the second place prize, a $70 Visa Gift Card.  Brian has made his trips from New Jersey worthwhile, finishing in the top three for the third time in in as many Long Island tournaments.

  • Thomas Antonopolous (89/47) is making a habit of finishing in second place in the Jones this fall.  The key to Thomas’s success at Cherry Creek were consecutive pars on holes 6 through 9. For third place Thomas earned a $40 Visa Gift Card.

Snead Flight (20.0 – Above):

  • Don Race (90) earned the trophy with one of the largest margins of victory(11 strokes) of the season.   Don had a birdie and four pars in his dominant round. He also earned his fourth win of the season, cementing himself at the top of the Snead flight in 2019-2020.  In addition to the Cherry Creek Fall Challenge Snead Flight Trophy Don was awarded an $80 Visa Gift Card.

Closest to the Pin

John Valente nestled his tee shot to 7’5” on the 2nd.  I misplaced the CTP sheet on the 6th hole, but I think Ozzie Ross won it.  If I am mistaken please let me know. Then on the 17th hole Ken Ambrosio earned the prize with a tee shot which measured 14’3” from the cup.
