Truckee Open @ Coyote Moon Recap
Saturday, October 12, 2019

Truckee, CA – The Golf Channel Am Tour’s Sacramento section had its first event of the 2019-2020 season at the scenic Coyote Moon GC up in Truckee on Saturday. A very cold, frost-delayed morning turned into an absolutely gorgeous fall day at the difficult mountain course. Keeping it in play off the tee and limiting three putts on the quick greens were two key factors in posting a good score on Saturday. Here were your top finishers who were able to do just that:

Mark Steppan, out of Oakland, was your Championship flight winner and tournament medalist on Saturday. Steppan posted (+3) 75 to take the flight by six shots over Mel White and Jeremy Lee (81s). The win on Saturday gets Steppan’s season off to a great start in his quest to (once again) represent the Bay Area at our Senior National Championships, which will be held at Sunriver Resort in September of 2020.

Another six shot victory was had in the Palmer flight on Saturday, as East Palo Alto’s Joe Roberson posted (+4) 76 to win it over nearest finisher Rickey Freeman (82). Roberson now has a victory under his belt and leads the Bay Area Senior Palmer flight standings after the first weekend of the 2019-2020 season.

Rick Kehr, out of Half Moon Bay, was your champion in the Hogan flight on Saturday. Kehr was promoted to Hogan just 10 days prior to the tournament, but was able to post (+9) 81 to win his first event in his new flight by one shot over Daniel Duvall (82). Kehr is batting 1.000 in his new flight and on the new season -- not a bad way to get things started off for the 2018 Bay Area Sarazen flight Player of the Year.

The lone playoff of the day came in the Sarazen flight on Saturday, as Jon Pappas and Tom Hunter both came in at (+18) 90 after 18 holes. Jon Pappas, out of Santa Rosa, made a clutch eagle on the first playoff hole to seal the deal. What a way to close out the first W of the new season for Pappas.

Tim Kolsrud, out of Tracy, was your champion in the Jones flight on Saturday. Kolsrud posted (+17) 89 to win the flight by a single shot over Aaron Danes (90). Kolsrud had a big season points wise last season and had a lot of close calls, but after Saturday’s performance, in the first event of the 2019-2020 season, he already equaled his win total from 2018-2019. He’ll look to get his second win early on in the season the next time he tees it up.

Another Kolsrud was your winner in the Snead flight on Saturday. Gregory Kolsrud, Tim’s brother, posted (+29) 101 to win the flight by five shots over James Trent (106). Kolsrud, a Modesto resident who teed it up just once in 2018-2019, looks like he is ready for a strong 2019-2020 campaign. He now leads the Senior Snead standings after the first weekend of the new season.
