HELEN SPENCER
1925-2020
The IWGA has lost one of its most loved supporters. Helen Spencer passed away on October 13, 2020 at the age of 95. She was an avid golfer and played in the IWGA State Amateur and Senior Amateur Championships for 36 years running.
When she was no longer able to play, she still attended championships when they were within travel distance and was always a welcome site to players and IWGA board members.
In 2019, she funded the annual Helen Spencer Award through the IWGA. The award is an annual $2,000 scholarship given to a graduating senior to assist with her college education. The recipients are awarded based on Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Sportsmanship.
The first Helen Spencer Scholarship was awarded this spring and went to Emma Thorman of Macomb who is now attending Illinois Wesleyan University.
Helen recognized the impact that golf can have one's life. Competition with friendship and sportsmanship.
The IWGA is honored to have had her as a friend.
