BEE CAVE, Texas — The 39th Trans-Mississippi Four-Ball Championship began at the prestigious Spanish Oaks Golf Club Monday, where teammates Casey Nelson of Minneapolis and Kane Hanson of Fargo, North Dakota took the lead in the clubhouse carding an impressive 7-under 64 first-round.

Nelson’s four birdies, combined with Hanson’s eight par-saves placed the teammates at the top of what is an early crowded leaderboard in the Mid-Amateur division.

An Arizona duo, Adam Walicki of Phoenix and Bryan Hoops of Chandler, finished one stroke behind the lead at 6-under 65.  Right behind Walicki/Hoops are Texas Hill Country natives Josh Swanson of Austin and Creighton Honeck of Bee Cave, shooting a 5-under 66 on the day.

Four teams in the Mid-Amateur division also join the top of the group, scoring in the red after Monday’s round.

Leading the Senior division and also scoring the day-one low are Lawrence Field of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Steven Hudson of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, having finished the round with a stellar 8-under 63. Field/Hudson’s team total recorded eight birdies and zero bogeys to put them in a four-stroke lead entering the second round.

Sandy Pierce of Houston and Jacky Lee of Flint, Texas look to improve on a solid 4-under 67 round, while following closely behind are north Texas teammates Larry Corson of Dallas and Mike Lohner of Southlake with a 3-under 68 first round.

Atop the Super Senior division are Californian teammates Dave Sheff of Dana Point and Rich Tolly of Laguna Niguel, who shot a 6-under 65.  But Sheff/Tolly’s lead is slim heading into Tuesday’s second round, as Billy McBee of Dallas and John Goode of Killeen, Texas trail by only one stroke, carding a 5-under 66 on the day.

Tuesday’s second round begins at 8:30 a.m. off No. 1 and 10 tees.  For more information and the leaderboard for the Trans-Miss Four-Ball Championship, click here.
