Huiras Has Lead at Home after First Round of 2019 Trans-Miss Senior & Mid-Master Championship

 

LA QUINTA, CA ­– The desert valley played host to a windy and competitive first round of the 2019 Trans-Miss Mid-Master & Senior Championship Tuesday at La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, California.  A full field of 144 competitors took to the course for the first round of the 54-hole stroke play championship, separated into four divisions:  Mid-Master (40-54 years old), Senior (55-64), Super-Senior (65-70) and Legends (70 and older). 

 

Tuesday’s overall low-score was 3-under-par 68, shot by Michael Huiras (Senior division) of La Quinta.  Huiras, a member of La Quinta Country Club, used his membership to his advantage.  Knowing the course was vital Tuesday, where high winds throughout  the afternoon added to the difficulty of the course.

 

 Huiras holds a three-shot lead in the Senior division over Lewis Stephenson’s (Mansfield, TX) and Daniel Sivadge’s (El Cajon, CA) 1-under 71.

 

Atop the leaderboard for the Mid-Master division was TMGA board member Mark Mance of Whitefish, Montana.  Mance shot an even-par 72, with an eagle on 11th.  He finished in second place in the 2018 Championship at Desert Forest Golf Club in Arizona. 

 

Doug Hopton-Jones of Mansfield, Texas leads the Super-Senior Division with a 1-over 73 on the day, holding a slim one-shot lead over Christopher Blair’s (Nipomo, CA) 2-over 74 round.

 

On his birthday, Philip Svanoe of Carefree, Arizona finished with the lead of the Legends Division, shooting a 1-over 73.  Svanoe was pleased to play a solid round to help celebrate the day.  Gary Shemano (Kentfield, CA) follows close behind after shooting a 3-over 75 on the day.

 

La Quinta Country Club previously hosted the Trans-Miss Championship in 2014.
