Below is a brief history and explanation of process:
Following the untimely death of long-time member, Loretta Grieve, in 1986, her husband, Donald Grieve (also a member) donated $10,000 in her memory with the idea of offering a scholarship to be named “The Loretta Grieve Scholarship” to eligible junior members or club employees of junior age intending to continue with post-secondary education. A committee was formed with the late Dave Roberts (a former club president) as chair and 1 or 2 directors as members and this standing committee took on the task of administering the scholarship. Some years later when Ron Roberge served on the board, Dave asked him to assist him with administration/process of this scholarship.
A name change to PMGC/Golden Ears Bursary was made because the fund was augmented annually by our Golden Ears Golf Tournament and because “bursary” better defines what it is and the deadline date was moved to August 31st from July 31st to give time for applicants to gather relevant information. The bursary ranges from $500 to $1000, as determined by the committee.
When Dave decided to decrease his involvement, he asked Ron to chair the committee. In turn, he asked Bill Anderson to assist me in the administration of the bursary. We remain a 2-man committee to this day, serving at the pleasure of the Board of Directors.
The winners of this bursary receive congratulatory letters. Whenever there are applicants who are not successful, they also receive a letter or a phone call, thanking them for applying and explaining the final decision. For your information, there is a policy page included in the application package defining eligibility.
