NOGA Player of the Year 101
OVERVIEW
Established in 1996, the Player of the Year is a season-long points competition culminating with the Tour Championship and Lewis Cup. Players vie to become the NOGA Tour Champion, which distinguishes the top player in the Open and Senior Division as the NOGA Tour Champion. Players to hoist the NOGA Tour Championship trophy include Jim Durr (2019 Senior), Sean McGuire (2019), Tom Jereb (2020 Senior), Michael Klaric III (2020), Monty Guest (2021 Senior), Chris Okeson (2021), Mark Borlin (2022 & 2023), Brian Smith (2022), and Ben Hogan (2023).
What You Need to Know
- The top 15 eligible players on the Player of the Year and Senior Play of the Year standings are eligible for the Tour Championship. The top 12 eligible players on the Player of the Year and Senior player of the Year standings are eligible for the Lewis Cup.
- To be eligible for the Tour Championship and the Lewis Cup players must compete in at least 3 NOGA Scratch tournaments. NOGA Scratch Tournaments include the NEOA, Season Long Match Play Qualifiers, or any Scratch Series Stroke Play, Four-Ball or Foursomes.
GREAT LAKES SCRATCH SERIES
The 2024 Greats Lakes Scratch Series features twelve tournaments beginning with the 2024 Scratch Four-Ball Championship and Season Long Match Play Qualifier and running through the Lewis Cup. Members earn Player of the Year points based on their finish at each tournament in the Great Lakes Scratch Series except the Interclub Team Championship and the Tournament of Champions, with an emphasis placed on wins and high finishes.
Player of the Year Points Distribution
• Scratch Series events award 175 points for first place in stroke play tournaments and 87.5 points for first place in four-ball tournaments.
• The Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship awards 350 points to first place
• NOGA Season-Long Match Play participants receive points for match wins and finishing runner-up or champion of the bracket
• Additional events like the Ohio Amateur and Ohio Open champions are awarded 262.5 points for first place.
• Players who qualify for a USGA Championship are awarded 150 points with the chance to earn additional points for making the cut, match play wins, and winning the USGA Championship
Player of the Year Points are awarded by finish position as defined in the point distribution tables.
Ties – Points will be distributed to those in tying positions using the same method currently used to distribute gift certificate winnings when there is a tie. That is, the total points for each tying position will be averaged and that average will be distributed to each player in the tying position.
TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
At the conclusion of the Regular Season (following the Scratch Stroke Play at Catawba Island Club), the top eligible 15 players in the Player of the Year and Senior Player of the Year standings will be eligible to play in NOGA Tour Championship.
Lewis Cup
The Lewis Cup, named after Ohio native Bob Lewis, is NOGA’s year-end Ryder Cup style event. The top 12 players after the Tour Championship from the NOGA Player of the Year and Senior Player of the Year points lists are eligible to play. The Lewis Cup features the Senior Team against the Open Team. The teams are captained by the Player of the Year and Senior Player of the Year.
