2023 Match Play Championship Announcement
It's time to announce the first major of the year, the 2023 Match Play Championship!
The format is a 64-player Match Play event, which will start with the posting of the Match Play Championship draw/brackets and the Calcutta auction following golf on March 4th. Each round must be completed in 2 or 3 weeks; round 1 is three weeks and subsequent rounds are 2 weeks.
To be eligible to play in the Match Play Championship, players must be members in good standing (membership dues have been paid for 2023) and must have played in at least 5 events in 2022 and 2023 combined by March 4th.
This year we will continue the tradition of having a Calcutta auction. The Calcutta auction will take place following golf on March 4th. The owners of the winning players split the Calcutta pool in the same manner that the regular pool is split by the Match Play winners.
The 2023 Match Play Championship and Calcutta auction will be managed by Charles Laugen and Dave Overby. Please help the BCMGC Board in thanking Charles and Dave for taking care of this year's event!!
A few reminders about rules for Match Play:
- Players playing in a match will NOT be able to play in the weekly Flight OR Skins games. All matches will be played strictly by Match Play Rules, which includes concession of putts and holes.
- Players must declare their tees for the entire event before the event begins if different than the tees played for regular Saturday rounds. The tees that each player plays from for their first match will be the tees they play from for all of their matches, regardless of the tees the players use for regular Saturday rounds (i.e., if a player plays from the white tees on a regular basis, they may declare that they will play all matches from the blue tees. However, when they play in a round that is not a match, they must return to the white tees).
Registration for the event will be opened at 8:00 AM on Monday, February 13th and closed at 8:00 AM on Monday, February 27th. The first 64 players who are eligible that register will be entered in the tournament. Any players that register after the field is filled will be put on the wait list to fill spots which open before the tournament begins.
The random draw for the Match Play player brackets will be performed by Charles Laugen & Dave Overby between February 28th and March 3rd. There will be four Match Play player brackets that will be divided up as follows:
- Nicklaus: Lowest Bear Course Handicap Players
- Watson: Low-Mid Bear Course Handicap Players
- Player: Mid-High Bear Course Handicap Players
- Palmer: Highest Bear Course Handicap Players
The Match Play player brackets will be available following the March 4th round at the start of the Calcutta auction. THERE WILL BE NO realignment of brackets once the draw has taken place. Those entered are expected to understand the deadlines and options to play ahead of the published schedule.
For Calcutta auction, one person will be responsible for buying a player when there is a group of people who buy a player. All Calcutta auction bids will start at $10.
The entry fee for the event is $25, $24 of which goes to the prize fund, and $1 of which goes to the club; note that the entry fee must be paid by March 4th.
There are 6 scheduled rounds of play. The dates are:
1st Round (March 11 through March 31)
2nd Round (April 1 through April 14)
3rd Round (April 15 through April 28)
4th Round (April 29 through May 12)
