Utah Country Club Ladies Golf Team Association
Team Match Process and Scoring
Applies to both A & B Team Matches
Competition:
- There are 10 Team Day Competitions each year held on a Thursday. Each Club in the Association will host both A & B Teams once each year.
- Every Team will compete in a modified “Match Play” competition against each of the other Clubs once per year. The 10th competition will be a “mix-up” (randomly assigned opponents – see schedule for details). The mix-up is often, but does not have to be, the last match of the season.
- The goal is to win as many points as possible each week of Team competition. Points accumulate throughout the season and the Team with the highest point total at the end is deemed the winner. *Scoring explained in detail below.
Teams:
- The Captain from each Club determines the 16 Team members eligible for each Team Day (8 for A Team and 8 for B Team) based on the lowest Indexes (Indexes are pulled from GHIN on the Thursday prior to the Match). In order of Index, each player will be assigned their position on the Team: 1-8 for A Team and the next 8 players will be assigned 1-8 for B Team. #1 is the lowest handicap, #2 is the next lowest and so on through #8.
- Each eight player Team plays four Matches: Players #1 & #2 pair up and play against their opponents #1 & #2 players. Players #3 & #4 pair up and play their opponents #3 & #4 and so on.
Tip: Make sure you know your numeric position when unloading your clubs. Your clubs will be put on the correct cart based on your Club and position #.
Rules & Scoring:
- Team play shall be governed by USGA, UGA and the host Club local rules.
- Each pair plays 18 holes in which there are 36 points available (2 per hole, 18 each nine); totaling 144 points for the entire eight player Team. The points earned by each pair on your team are added together for the total Team Score.
- The game is a Modified Match play with stroke play rules. Each player plays her own ball. The Low NET score from each pair is scored against the opposing pairs’ Low NET score. The remaining player’s Net scores are then compared. The two available points can either be won, split, or tied.
NOTE: Your score will not be against the same person on every hole. It is always Low net score against Low net score and High net score against High net score.
- Strokes: Within a foursome, all players stroke off the lowest handicapped player. The player with the lowest course handicap, receives zero strokes. The remaining 3 players receive the difference between their course handicap and the player with the lowest handicap.
Example:
Player A Course Handicap = 10
Player B Course Handicap = 12 = receives 2 strokes; one on each hole handicapped as 1 & 2
Player C Course Handicap = 15 = receives 5 strokes; one on each hole handicapped as 1,2,3,4 & 5
Player D Course Handicap = 20 = receives 10 strokes; one on each hole handicapped as 1-10
NOTE: The maximum number of strokes any player will receive is capped at 14. If the low handicap is 10 and the highest handicap in the group is 26, she will not receive the full differential of 16 – she will receive 14 strokes due to this cap.
- As in regular Match play, you can give your opponents putts (i.e. “gimmies”). You can also “pick up” if you feel you are out of the hole – the point will be conceded to your opponent if you pick up.
NOTE: It is important to know where the strokes fall so you do not give a putt or pick up without considering the impact of who gets a stroke and who might not.
- Unlike regular Match play that could end before the completion of 18 holes, you will play all 18 holes even if you cannot win the most points in the match. Since the objective is to get as many points as possible for your team, you will continue to play and attempt to win as many points as possible.
- Each twosome will keep a scorecard. Top 3 lines are your Team: Player 1, Player 2 and Team points. Below your team score use 3 lines for your Opponent: Player 1, Planer 2 and Opponent’s points. Your opponents will also keep a scorecard. The 2 teams must verify scores and points. Both teams must agree and sign both scorecards.
- Submit scores to the Captain of Captains: At the conclusion of your round, turn in your completed scorecards to your Captain who will tally Team points, agree with the opponents Captain and submit to the Captain of Captains.
