OUR TOURNAMENTS
To play in our weekly (Wednesday) tournaments (entry fee $5.00) you must:
- be a member of Linville Land Harbor golf (avid, casual, monthly, associate). POA can help you become a member
- be a member of the LLH 18 Hole Men’s Golf ($20) payable by June 15th. See Golf Shop for more information.
- have a GHIN index. See French Harvey for more information.
- Set up an account at the Golf Shop to track entry fees and chits won.
Each tournament will have a tournament director in charge of the tournament. His job is to ensure pairings (tee sheets) are created and disseminated, scores are validated and entered in Golf Genius and results are disseminated. The tournament director runs the tournament and with the exception of rule disputes his decisions (right or wrong) are final and uncontested. Golf Genius provides a step by step approach to running a tournament. The last step for each qualified tournament (tournaments where each player plays own ball) is to post the score into the GHIN system to update handicaps.
TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
Every Wednesday beginning in May and ending in October members will be invited via email to participate in next week’s tournament. The computer system known as “GOLF GENIUS” accepts your response from your invitation and adds your name to the other participants who plan to play. On Monday proceeding the Wednesday tournament a Tee Sheet (pairings) will be sent via email to all the members. The Tee Sheet identifies your tee time and who you play with. Once the tournament is played and scores are posted to GOLF GENIUS you will be notified via email the results of the tournament. All winners will be rewarded with chits (1 chit = $1). All chits can be redeemed for merchandise at the Golf Shop. See Richard at the Golf Shop for more information regarding the use of chits.
Entering Weekly Tournaments - You will receive an email through Golf Genius inviting you to play or not to play an upcoming tournament. Your decision must be returned no late than 4:30 the Monday before the scheduled tournament date. The same cutoff time applies to cancellations. Exceptions, the cutoff time and day for our Club Championship and Member-Member Tournaments is 4:30PM on Friday of the prior week. Weekly entry fees are normally $5.00 per person per round. The Skins game, club Championship, and Member / Member tournaments are exceptions.
Tee times - Most tournament tee times will begin at 8:30 on Wednesdays. On our luncheon days and days the Ladies 9 Hole group have a luncheon we will have a shotgun start off the back 9 at 8:30. See our 2024 calendar.
Rules - USGA rules apply with the following exceptions: 1) those listed in the current “LAND HARBOR GOLF CLUB Golf Member’s Handbook”. 2) With the exceptions of The Club Championship, if your ball lies in the first cut/fairway you may reposition your ball by use of your club within the length of the score card.
Conduct – USGA rules apply, please note; Play with integrity, show considerations for others and take good care of the course.
Pairings – Your Tournament Director for the week will prepare a pairings (tee sheet) format for the week and post it on the bulletin board outside the Golf Shop and email it to all members.
Cancellations & Delays – Once the pairings are published, should you decide to cancel or are a no show, your entry fee will be not be refunded but remain in the entry fee pot. If the tournament is canceled due to inclement weather or some other unforeseen reason, your entry will be credited to you at the Golf Shop.
The Tournament Director in coordination with the Golf Operations Manager will make decisions regarding cancellations, delays and rescheduling. If the reason is for weather once the tournament has begun, the Tournament Director may, at his discretion, decide to cancel the tournament or to use 9 hole scores, 18 hole scores or a combination of both.
Quota point tournaments - Your point score for a tournament is determined by adding your total points won for that round, then subtracting from that your quota point goal.
This will result in your point score and may be either a positive or negative number. For team events, points from each counting member are added together for the team score.
Points per hole are awarded as follows:
Eagle = 4 |
Birdie = 3 |
Par = 2 |
Bogey= 1 |
Winners -The tournament winner/winners will be those with the highest quota point score. The distribution of the entrance fees will be awarded to approximately about half of the entrants.
Scorecards & Scores – Normally score cards will be prepared for you and available in the golf room at the Men’s 18 desk or handed to you by the Tournament Director. If the tournament starts off the back 9 the Tournament Director will be in the upper parking lot with the score cards. Someone in your group should prepare and use a backup card. Turn in your score card after the round in the golf room. Do not post your score into Golf Genius. After auditing the score card, the Tournament Director.
Club Championship, Member/Member and Lil Abner Tournaments
These are special tournaments; formats may vary from year to year. Formats, rules and winnings for these events will be determined by either the Tournament Director and or the Golf Operations Manager.

RECENT USGA RULE CHANGES
Hopefully all of us are now acquainted with the new USGA rule changes for 2020.
The most frequent complaint regarding golf is that it takes too much time to play a round. Most of the new rules have been implemented to speed up play.
The USGA is now using the World Handicap System to determine the maximum strokes to take for a given hole. The maximum hole score for each player will be limited to a Net Double Bogey. This adjustment is more consistent from hole to hole than the Equitable Stroke Control procedure. The Net Double Bogey calculation is simple: Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive.
If you want to check all of the changes you can go to the USGA website. The following changes are the ones mostly likely to affect you during play. Keep in mind when playing on our course we also have local rules that supersede the USGA rules. These rules are listed as course rules in the LLHGC Golf Member’s Handbook available in the golf shop.
- Drop from knee height (NOT shoulder height) when standing.
- Measure the area to drop in with the longest club in your bag (except a putter).
- Drop in and play from the relief area.
- When dropping back-on-the-line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your chosen reference point.
- Time to search for lost ball – 3 minutes (NOT 5 minutes).
- If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty.
- No penalty for a double hit – it only counts as one stroke.
- No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke.
- No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole.
- Spike marks and other damage on the putting green can be repaired. Ball accidentally moved on putting green – no penalty and replace.
- Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position –replace ball on the original spot.
- The term Penalty Areas replace Water Hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough.
- You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area.
- Loose impediments may be removed anywhere on the course – soil and loose sand on the green only. They cannot be removed when touching the ball in a penalty area.
- In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club during your backswing or in taking practice swings.
- Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough. (“embedded” means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground).
- Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for 2 penalty strokes.
- You cannot have your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance.
- Pace of Play - it is recommended that you take no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be able to play more quickly than that) and Ready Golf in stroke play is encouraged.
