Lorraine Houlahan, a Past President of the WDCGA (2003-2004), believed the WDCGA should sponsor a companion event to the Keefer Cup. Long an advocate of competitive golf among women, Lorraine specified that her Cup be flighted, and that prizes and the overall trophy be awarded for the lowest gross scores.
The Houlahan Cup is played annually at Mount Vernon Country Club, Lorraine’s local course. This tournament remains a staple of the WDCGA and perennially attracts a very high number of participants.
Lorraine passed way in June 2022. Lorraine was a long time member of Mount Vernon Country Club, an accomplished golfer, an avid promoter of the game of golf, an unbelievable competitor and an unforgettable person of dry wit and humor.
Lorraine was a staunch advocate for women’s golf and was the impetus for encouraging so many Mount Vernon women over the years to compete in club events, district team matches, state team matches and USGA events. She was a motivating influence for the development of so many accomplished golfers at Mount Vernon who have competed across Virginia. Lorraine had a golden heart when expressing interest in any new player to the game. Her competitive spirit was unparalleled and if you were in a match against Lorraine you had better bring your best. Lorraine was runner up in the 1999 VSGA Senior Women’s Stroke Play Championship, was low “Senior Senior” (age 60 and older) in the 2003 VSGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship. Lorraine was a member of the victorious Mount Vernon teams who won the VSGA State Team Matches in 1991-1993, 1997, 2000-2001.
It is in her honor that her Mount Vernon friends wish to continue the tradition of sponsorship of
the Houlahan Cup. Her spirit will live on in this event that she created.
